my ipod nano 7g

halo-halo.

my governor is banning phones in the state's public schools. alright.

it also says the that using it during lunch is banned, for students will be distracted, and they want to encourage physically talking with others.

personally, i kinda don't understand. i don't believe the reasoning hits. i feel like some people already found their group, and those who are already using their phone don't have the opportunity to communicate with others anyway (me), but i admit i'm probably being irrational and this could probably work; just not for me. interested on thoughts about this.

i will say that this does have some merit. i hate using my phone sometimes and taking my mind off it and social media makes me feel all joyful again.

i say this because the ipod nano 7g my mom had does not count as a cell phone and therefore i can use it without any repurcussions :3

they define a cell phone as a device that can call, message, and send media.

but the definition also includes dumbphones and i'm not happy about it.

a dedicated music player is very awesome and cool i highly recommend.

you can just focus on this tiny dumb device that doesn't have many features other than music and video and radio and clock and that's about it. carried me through so many bus rides :3

(but i also like the times where i just sit down and look outside the window)

despite the fact it's been sitting in a drawer for the past decade being unused it's still going strong. battery lasts for a few days of use and may survive for a week or two unused.

the bad thing about the ipod nano 7g is that you have to use the itunes app specifically on the microsoft store or get a macos and add media there.

i also say this because there's a custom firmware you can replace some music players with called rockbox, and it looks cool!

Rockbox aims to be considerably more functional and efficient than your device's stock firmware while remaining easy to use and customizable. It is a goal to not only offer a wide range of functionality, but where possible make sure that this functionality is presented in a consistent manner that is easy to learn and use. It is written by users, for users. (source)

(also, for those wondering, the icons on the site are most likely the silk icons set on famfamfam. roblox used to use this. the site may have gone offline at some point in the last year though. bummer.)

it's also infinitely more customizable with its themes than the ipod nano 7g. you can really only change the wallpaper and that's about it. you can't even change the color. the color you have for the ipod is the same one you have on the device. bummer.

it also isn't supported.

as of current, rockbox supports many classic ipods, the ipod mini, and the first 2 ipod nanos, but not any future generations. as of my search, there are also no other alternative firmwares that can work for the ipod nano 7g. this is probably because they couldn't reverse engineer it or something, which is probably the process required to do it (also cool site). they got code execution working as of 2023-12-30, but not the rest. (although, they are preparing support for my ipod as of recent - changelogs here - so i'm looking forward to that. well, technically not; just preparing, so i don't really know if they are)

their last release, 3.15, was 5 years and 13 days ago, so that's great.

getting media onto this ipod

because rockbox doesn't work and i use linux (and enjoy it might i add), i have to do some roundabout way: virtualbox.

i have to start my windows virtual machine (sometimes the virtual machine locks out for any future readers the user is vboxuser and the pw is changeme for unattended installs) open up itunes either share a folder or drag and drop files onto the virtual machine connect my ipod to the computer allow the virtual machine to use it drag and drop the files (also for future readers, itunes does not enjoy anything that isn't 128kbps m4a, so no opus nor lower quality) onto the ipod eject the ipod and then poweroff the virtual machine for 2 months because i don't use it often

it's inconvenient and tedious but also sort of nice in a way. i can't add music nice and fast like streaming platforms (that said, i have not used any), and that inconvenience leads me to curate what i put on it. it's nice.

i don't put albums and such onto it. i put the music and videos i genuinely like on it, even if it leads me to disorganization; from Yakuza 5 - The place where I used to be to hummingbird PARQUETS. it's wonderfully diverse. i wouldn't have my ipod any other way.

Unknown Artist is the greatest musician they always have what i need

extra: lazy cat by Eve

(please just open up the video on youtube i wanted to embed this but i think this makes the experience worse)

honestly, very great and wonderful song. i like. hats off to eve (and their team).

it cannot be understated how much i like OFF SCRIPT style (the animator for this mv). it's so pleasing. el gato is cool. their oc looks cool too. it's very enjoyable.

(that being said, their plushie and clothes in their shop look quite cool methinks.)

also, if you wander into the comment section, you'll notice that people praise the captions. i do too. it's awesome. it's very experimental and impressive (or at least uses the captions in a way that most youtubers don't). enable it. the song's japanese anyway. it's like that one kikuo song. just remember to reset the captions if it doesn't look quite right. great job astro.

lyrics are quite nice. hopefully i improve myself soon.

go watch it. i'm very entranced.

extra extra: updates on things

i've started using 11ty because of tm and i really enjoy it. it's so nice just... not having to write html for every post and have it work. it makes things so much easier. i can just write and the site will just update itself. i don't have to deal with the ol' javascript template thing i used to use. i'll probably redraw nymsalt and some point since i redesigned. same with this website. i've got a few ideas. this style is nice though.

unrelated, i hate spritework. probably because i don't get digital just yet. same with character design. but i got nobody and i don't have the means, so making sprites i'll go.

OFF SCRIPT's and riifushi's styles and designs are nice, so i'll probably reference from there.

also, unrelated unrelated, use a journal. it's nice too. probably should've put this section there instead of here, but i like how long this post got so i'll just leave it.

kinda bored. need to do something productive.

extra extra extra

EDIT: 2024-12-18

a little more updates on things actually related to the article that i "found" today (went on a website).

there are actually two extra vulnerabilities available for the ipod nano 7g, both visible on freemyipod:

they both can execute arbitrary code.

ipod_sun is the older of the two (at least an year old) and exploits fonts for code execution. it also works on nano 6g. a person on mastodon used this vulnerability for a screen capture. that same mastodon user also plays a nice part in exploiting ipods, inspiring the development of ipod_sun (i literally just scrolled down on the repository)!

s5late is the newer of the two and is at least three days old (public, at least) and can load images (not pictures).

there is no new movement on supporting the nano 6g and 7g for rockbox, but more people have expressed interest. i'll probably update this again when something happens.

seeing the ipod hacking scene is pretty fun.

also phones are now not banned during lunch. cool.

:3
